Spoons at the Beach

My family returned from our yearly beach vacation this weekend. During the trip we enjoyed lots of sand, sun, and good food.

I’ve developed a personal tradition of whittling on driftwood while sitting on the beach. Last year, I switched from a pocket knife to a spoon carving set.

Driftwood spoons really aren’t functional. The wood is too soft, and has been soaked in sea water and who knows what else. So when I’m done, I try and end up with a spoon that still looks like a piece of driftwood.

I’m really just looking for a memento of the trip that has a personal touch.

From the featured image, you can see my choice for beach reading this year. Spoon by Barn the Spoon, is an interesting look at someone who has dedicated their life to the pursuit of their craft. The book also details several different styles of spoons, and the methods used to make them.

I’m getting caught up at work and at home after being gone. Hopefully I’ll have a few projects to write about soon.
