A Crooked Spoon

A few days ago, I closed out my post on greenwoodworking with a spoon blank I roughed out of a crook from a Bradford Pear tree. I finished that spoon this weekend as I was waiting on the finish to dry on another project.

I thought I was done a couple of days earlier, but I left the handle too chunky and decided to take another whack at it.

It turned out pretty well, I’m definitely getting better. I wound up with a handle that tapers all the way down from the end to where it meets the bowl, following the curving grain as it goes. It’s not a big spoon, only 6″-7″ long, and the bowl is about 1″ wide. Looks like a good ice cream spoon to me.

Quick update on the kitchen table. The top is stained and has two coats of sealer on it. I hope to have it wrapped up by the end of next weekend. I was left with some rags soaked in oil-based stain when I was done…

Burn those rags. Save your shop…
