Something to Do

Like most families, we didn’t get out much last week. People are keeping to themselves as much as possible, which I guess is the right thing to do for now. But, these are strange days and everyone is handling it the best that they can.

Our schools were closed last Monday, and they’ll stay closed for another three weeks. I went to the office last week, but started working from home yesterday. I’ll go back to the office in a few weeks as well.

My wife is doing a fantastic job of keeping everyone organized, busy, and productive. But, after all week at home, some cabin fever set in. On Saturday, we all went for a walk, went for a drive, and each of us made something.

I’ve held on to a couple of ash turning blanks for a long while, and I’ve been wanting to make a small carving mallet. It was a pretty simple project. I didn’t take any measurements. I just turned it to what I thought looked and felt right.

I’m not going to get into a lot of step-by-step details, I’ll just show the main steps in the pictures below.

More interesting than my project, was the rest of the family’s efforts.

My wife made a batch of her bath salts, and some essential oil rollers, while my two boys (with a little help) made a magic wand and a leather iPod pouch.

I want to say thank you to everyone doing their best to keep people healthy, fed, and safe. Without you we’d all be in bad shape right now.

How great it is to be creative during this time. The kids are learning more than you think working with parents.
